Spreading the Word: Translational Neurotechnologies

July 15, 2024

On June 27th 2023 we were proud to host our first seminar devoted to the topic of
Neurotechnologies. We aimed to engage more people in the field and share our ideas about
different BCI approaches. It was a great opportunity to learn from experts and showcase our
progress. We believe that the event enriched everyone's knowledge and sparked curiosity.

Our lineup of speakers was truly impressive, with special mentions to the representative
from NeuroTechX and the renowned expert in Translational NeuroTechnologies, the one
and only Dr. Simon Jacob. As a professor of Translational Neurotechnology at TUM, he
brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise in applying neuroscientific discoveries and
technological advancements to develop practical solutions for diagnosing, treating, and
understanding neurological disorders and conditions. Their presence made the seminar
even more incredible, and our attendees were thrilled to hear from them.

Prof. Jacob obtained his medical doctorate degree in 2006 based on experimental
neurophysiological work conducted at Yale University (USA). He later became a
postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Integrative Neuroscience in Tübingen, and then
qualified as a board-certified neurologist after training in Tübingen and at the Charité in
Berlin. Since 2019 Prof. Jacob is a professor at TUM.

During our seminar, Prof. Jacob enlightened us about the fascinating field of invasive Brain-
Computer Interface (BCI) systems and the groundbreaking projects he is currently involved
in. Specifically, his research focuses on utilizing Deep Brain Recording and Stimulation
Systems to understand in depth the complex underlying mechanisms of speech recognition
and production at the cellular level. It was especially fun to listen to the recordings of
individual spiking neurons, provided as an illustration of the recording resolution capacity.
Additionally, he aims to leverage this technology to assist individuals facing speech
difficulties resulting from conditions such as stroke, helping them regain their ability to
comprehend and/or express speech. Prof. Jacob's work holds tremendous promise in
advancing our understanding of the brain and enhancing the lives of those affected by
speech-related challenges.

In addition to the captivating talk, we were thrilled to present the NeuroTUM club to the
audience, providing them with a glimpse into our vibrant team. It was our pleasure to host so
many people interested in the intersection between neuroscience and engineering, which
was way more than we expected since it was the first event of NeuroTUM nonexclusive to
club members. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with the NeuroTechX community
and engage in insightful discussions, sharing our ideas and exchanging thoughts during the
networking session. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement, accompanied by the
delightful company of pretzels, creating a truly memorable and enjoyable experience for all.

We are looking forward to setting up the next event, and we don't want you to miss out on
the excitement! Be sure to stay connected with us, as we will announce the details soon. By
following us, you'll be among the first to know and have the opportunity to participate in
another enriching experience. We can't wait to have you join us again!
